About Paul Miner, M.A., M.S.

Transpersonal Coach • Grief Educator • Thanatologist • Meditation Teacher

I believe that grief is not something to overcome—it is something to be honored, witnessed, and integrated. At its deepest level, grief is a sacred response to love, loss, and the impermanence of life.

My work is rooted in the understanding that encounters with death, loss, and profound transition can become catalysts for healing, meaning-making, and transformation. Through Sacred Thanatology, I accompany individuals, groups, and organizations as they navigate grief, mortality, spiritual questions, and life's many thresholds.

My approach is informed by a unique integration of transpersonal psychology, thanatology, contemplative practice, depth psychology, and spiritual wisdom traditions. I create spaces where people can explore grief not as a pathology to be fixed, but as a natural and deeply human experience that can open us to greater compassion, authenticity, and connection.

My Journey

My path to this work has been shaped by both professional study and personal experience.

For seven years, I lived and studied as a Jesuit seminarian, immersing myself in spiritual formation, contemplative practice, and the art of accompanying others through life's joys and struggles. During that time, I developed a deep appreciation for the transformative power of silence, reflection, and meaningful conversation.

After leaving religious life, I felt called to explore the intersection of psychology, spirituality, and human transformation more deeply. This led me to earn a Master of Arts in East-West Psychology and a Graduate Certificate in Spiritual Counseling from the California Institute of Integral Studies, where I studied the integration of Western psychology with contemplative and wisdom traditions.

My growing interest in grief, mortality, and meaning-making eventually led me to complete a Master of Science in Thanatology—the study of death, dying, grief, and bereavement. Through this work, I discovered that grief extends far beyond bereavement. We grieve relationships, identities, dreams, communities, ecosystems, and versions of ourselves that can no longer continue.

Today, my work brings together these diverse strands of experience and study into an approach that is both grounded and expansive, practical and deeply spiritual.

My Philosophy

I believe that grief is not a disorder to cure or a problem to solve.

Grief is a sacred expression of our capacity to love.

When we allow ourselves to engage grief with curiosity, compassion, and courage, it can become a doorway into greater wholeness. While grief can be painful and disorienting, it can also invite us into deeper relationships with ourselves, others, the natural world, and the mystery of existence.

My work is influenced by transpersonal psychology, Jungian depth psychology, contemplative traditions, existential philosophy, ecopsychology, and contemporary grief theory. Together, these perspectives recognize that loss affects not only our emotions but also our sense of identity, purpose, belonging, and connection to something larger than ourselves.

A Final Word

The word sacred does not refer to any particular religion. Rather, it points to the mystery, depth, and significance that can emerge when we engage life's most profound experiences with openness and reverence.

Whether you are grieving a loved one, facing a major life transition, struggling with questions about meaning and mortality, or seeking a deeper relationship with yourself and the world, you do not have to navigate the journey alone.

It would be an honor to walk alongside you.
